Deep Down ’s gameplay style is dungeon crawler, which involves the player exploring dungeons based on the memories collected on artifacts. Weapons such as spears and swords can be utilized. The game is also a multiplayer title with online features like that of the Souls series. Players can band together in dungeons and battle bosses, including fire-breathing dragons and rock creatures.

The player perspective for Deep Down begins in New York City in the year 2094. By touching magical artifacts, players are teleported into the distant past to explore dungeons and avoid or battle monsters and seek treasure. Each of these dungeons are randomly generated for each player. As well as this, the artifacts you touch correspond to an emotion, including anger, rage, hate, envy, lust and wrath.

At the February 2013 PlayStation Meeting where Sony debuted the PlayStation 4, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, best known for his work on the Street Fighter series, revealed Deep Down alongside their new “Panta Rhei” game engine, designed specifically for the PlayStation 4. Deep Down was the working title, and Panta Rhei was announced to replace MT Framework as Capcom’s game engine of choice. The reveal trailer showed an armored warrior battling a medieval fire-breathing dragon. They chose to make a new brand for freedom to explore next-gen video game console architecture, and so as to avoid limitations from consumer expectations. The game did not have a presence at the E3 2013 video game expo. Deep Down is known as of current to have no release date, but has had confirmation of being released in 2015. During Tokyo Game Show 2013, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono announced that Deep Down is a free-to-play title.
